Jack Hemingway's own account of a life spent on rivers — and of growing up as Ernest Hemingway's eldest son.
Published in 1986, Misadventures of a Fly Fisherman: My Life With and Without Papa is the memoir of John Hadley Nicanor Hemingway — "Bumby" to his father, Jack to everyone else. It is a fishing book that keeps wandering off into history, and a history book that keeps wandering back to the water.
He writes about a Paris childhood spent among his father's friends, about learning to cast long before he could reasonably be trusted with a rod, and about the long shadow of a famous surname. He writes about the war — parachuting into occupied France with the OSS, a fly rod in his kit by his own account, and the capture and imprisonment that followed. And he writes about the decades afterwards in Idaho, as a conservationist who spent as much of his life arguing for rivers as fishing them.
It is funnier than you would expect, and unguarded about the parts that were not funny at all.
